KUAN Architects (UCD) have unveiled their design for The Antique Fish, a shopping center, and the first large-scale commercial construction in Qinshui, a developing city in the Shanxi Province in China.
Located at the crossing of two rivers and surrounded by mountains, the project is designed to mimic its surroundings, as well as traditional Chinese art, taking on a long, fish-like shape and using traditional materials such as blue stones, green tiles, white jade, and wood.
The building is divided into three levels, with the ground level separated into cubes for individual shops. Above, a transparent, spine-like walkway comprises the second floor, which culminates in an open café at the west end that looks out onto the town’s distinct “Shanshui” landscape. With a looser layout, the top floor more sporadically resembles the forms of traditional Shanxi houses.
The west façade opens onto the town’s public square, with green spaces and traditional paving organized around an ancient tree where people can come together to relax in a peaceful environment.
The project will be completed in the fall of 2016. Explore more pictures below, and learn more here.
